“Redecorate” is the eleventh and final track from Twenty One Pilot’s 2021 album “Scaled And Icy”. The song eerily recounts the perspectives of three people and their lives just before they die. The three departing souls seem preoccupied with “unfinished” business in the world of the living.
Twenty One Pilots announced the release of their sixth studio album “Scaled And Icy” on May 21, 2021. Two singles were released ahead of the release of the album, namely; “Shy Away” and “Choker”.
On Apple Music, Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler Joseph shared the inspiration behind “Redecorate”; “I had a friend of mine whose son died and they would keep his room the same way he left it. I remember thinking what a crazy and powerful story that was, and how point it makes me wonder, “What are people going to do with my stuff? It can actually bring you down to earth, just make sure you don’t make any horrible decisions. I realize now how It’s hard to talk about it, but this song is really important to me. I love the message in it and I hope our fans hear what I’m trying to say in it. Because it’s a little tricky, but it’s one of my favorite tracks and it’s pretty powerful if you let it.

“Redecorate” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
The into is a reference to the fictional town of DEMA, which the band had famously created on their previous albums. The lines come from one of the documents that the group presented during the album “Trench”.
In the first verse we hear about the first “he” of the song. It is fair to assume that this person is about to die. It is said that in your last breath on this earth, your life flashes before your eyes. Also in the song, we hear Tyler sing about how that person’s life unfolded in chronological order in those final moments.
We learn a lot about this unhappy soul who leaves this world. We hear he liked to collect stuff – maybe even a hoarder. But, they say, that was never enough for him. It could very well be a matter of relationships. Perhaps this person only collected material things and not friends or families. Later in the verse we also learn that this person had a dark corner in his room that called out to him every day. It’s a reference to the mental demons he fought. The lack of loved ones in his life certainly didn’t help silence those demons.
The demons never asked permission to occupy his head. He had no one to get help from. This person tried to fight these demons on their own but failed. So he bids farewell and hopes that anyone who cares about him can forgive his last actions.
The three subjects of this song are more or less forced to leave this world. So, it’s likely that along the way, they’ll turn around and look at the life they just ended and realize that it wasn’t perfect at all. All three realize that they are leaving “unfinished business” behind them. Of course, it is now too late for these three souls to turn around. They can only wonder what the people around him are going to do with their lives. Will they eternalize the life of each of these three characters? or will they redecorate it with new memories?
In the second verse of the song, we are introduced to another person – a woman, this time. We also learn a lot about this person. The singer shares how she was continually haunted by some mistakes she made in the past. These mistakes made her despise herself. She could never leave those memories behind. The fact that her mirrors are covered in blankets means that every time she looks at the mirror, instead of her reflection, she sees the person who made those mistakes.
She’s not afraid of her reflection
But what she could see behind
The “traditional way” to change a name, as the song goes, is when a girl gets married and changes her last name to her husband’s. However, Tyler assures that this is not what he is talking about with his life. This means that this person even wanted to change his name (first and last name) to get away from the life of mistakes he made in the past.
However, one unfortunate night her room got a little too cold so she took the covers off the mirrors to cover herself in the warmth. But she wasn’t prepared to see what was shown in the mirror when she took the covers off. All the memories she did her best to repress were crashing down on her. It was too much for her to handle that night, and she says goodbye to this world.
The story of the third protagonist unfolds in the bridge of “Redecorate”. Although we don’t hear this person’s story, we do hear that he struggles with addiction issues. He’s sedated most days of the week, which could suggest he’s on severe medication for the underlying issues he’s been battling.
The line “reduced and isolated” is a reference to the album title “Scaled And Icy”, which Tyler Joseph explained as an “acronym” for “reduced and isolated”. Tyler explained that being forced into lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, most humans felt like they were reduced and isolated.
