The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” soared to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The single climbed 5 spots in one week, overtaking Sia’s “Cheap Thrills”, which topped the chart for weeks. The Chainsmokers and Halsey – who provide vocals in this track – both earned their first Billboard Hot 100 single of their careers.

“Closer” by The Chainsmokers was released as a single on July 29, 2016. Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers and Halsey contributed vocals to the song, while Andrew Taggart, Shaun Frank, Alex Pall, and Frederic Kennett contributed lyrics to the track.

Alex Pall sums up the general meaning of “Closer” perfectly;

“The song is comedic in nature, we wanted to make a nice song about meeting your ex, falling in love with them on a physical level and remembering all the awful truths about why it didn’t happen. didn’t work out. So I hope the lyrics evoke some sort of emotional connection with people, but we want people to have fun with it.

Over the past week, the single has racked up the highest digital sales, highest streaming, and highest airplay earnings. It’s pretty obvious for the popularity of this song.

The lyrics of “Closer” are quite simple and straightforward.

Verse 1 is sung by Andrew Taggart.

Hey, I was fine before I met you
I drink too much and it’s a problem but I’m fine
Hey, you tell your friends it was nice to meet them
But I hope never to see them again

The singer puts himself here in a confessional atmosphere. He admits that he drinks too much (alcohol) and that most of his relationship problems can be attributed to his alcoholism. But he’s fine, he was fine too, until this woman comes into his life. He was a happy alcoholic before.

The singer has also met the girls’ friends and he has no plans to see them again. Maybe they met at a bar and the guy did something so awful that he never stands a chance with that girl (or her friends) again.

The pre-chorus of “Closer” is sung by Andrew Taggart of The Chainsmokers

I know it breaks your heart
Moved to town in a broken down car
And four years, no calls
Now you’re pretty in a hotel bar
And I can’t stop
No, I can’t stop

The couple had broken up and the girl had moved to town to pursue her dreams. They weren’t financially stable, hence the “broken down car” reference. After moving, they no longer had communication with each other. I don’t know what her dream was (but it certainly wasn’t to be a bartender), but now she’s a bartender at a nice, financially stable hotel. And the guy just can’t control himself.

The Chainsmokers released the perfect reasoning behind those “Closer” lyrics.

The chorus of “Closer” is performed by Andrew Taggart

So baby pull me closer to the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets from the corner
From the mattress that you stole
From your roommate in Boulder
We never get old

These lyrics from “Closer” by The Chainsmokers clearly explain the connection situation that the artists talked about in the previous lines. But there are a few important points to note here.

They have sex in the backseat of the girl’s Range Rover, which the singer says she can’t afford. So either it’s her parents’ money or she’s a gold digger. The girl has a tattoo on her shoulder. All the signs point to qualifying this girl as a spoiled teenager.

We never get old
We never get old

The reunion between the exes had made them feel like the good old days. They haven’t grown at all. They are the same reckless teenagers back from the village.

Beginning with verse 2 of “Closer”, Halsey joins

You are as beautiful as the day I met you
I forget why I left you, I was crazy
Stay and play this Blink-182 song
That we beat to death in Tucson, OK

The girl is flooded with memories with him from the past. For her, he has changed a bit and he still looks as good as she remembers. Now her mind begins to wonder: Did she make a mistake? She doesn’t remember why they broke up. It’s been so long (4 years minimum), and she can only reminisce about the good times.

Andrew Taggart says they were listening to Blink-182’s “I Miss You” when they were writing “Closer,” so why not pay tribute in song!

Halsey’s chorus has a minor change from Andrew Taggart’s chorus

I know it breaks your heart
Moved to town in a broken down car
And four years, no call
Now I’m pretty in a hotel bar
And I can’t stop
No, I can’t stop

Halsey says she looks pretty in a hotel bar, we didn’t get the two people confused.

Andrew Taggart and Halsey join in the final chorus of “Closer” which is a stunning harmonization of vocals.

So baby pull me closer to the backseat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets from the corner
From the mattress that you stole
From your roommate in Boulder
We never get old

“Closer” by The Chainsmokers is a gift to anyone who has and misses their exes. And as Alex Pall wishes, I hope this song reminds the exes why they broke up and doesn’t make the same mistake as in the song.

Catchy lyrics, incredible vocals and a rare electro-dance beat have helped “Closer” be one of the best singles in the world right now. It is clear that the track will hold its throne for a few more weeks.
