To celebrate the release of the re-recorded “Fearless” album in 2021, we’re taking a look at some of the iconic tracks from the album. In this article, we dive into one of the most commercially successful tracks from the album and Taylor’s career in general. Let’s take a look at “You Belong with Me” by Taylor Swift.

“You Belong with Me” was released on April 18, 2009 as the third single from Taylor Swift’s second studio album “Fearless”. It has also reached the top 10 of the charts in several countries, including Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The song also went on to become one of the best-selling singles on Taylor’s discography with over 7.8 million copies sold, behind “Love Story” on the album.

The music video for “You Belong with Me” was well received by fans and the industry. The clip shows Taylor Swift playing two versions of herself: a nerd and a hottie. The hottie version is dating the guy (played by actor Lucas Till) while the nerdy version is secretly in love with him. The clip won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Female Video at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, and the infamous Kanye West interrupted Taylor’s acceptance speech. This incident escalated into a feud which has lasted to this day. The clip has over a billion views on YouTube alone.

The decision to re-record her first six albums stems from the long-standing legal feud between Taylor Swift and her former label ‘Big Machine Records’, the first of which will be her 2008 second studio album’ Fearless’. The re-recorded ‘Fearless ( Taylor’s Version) ‘contains six unreleased tracks, including a collaboration with Keith Urban. The album will be released on April 9, 2021, with a re-recording of “You Belong with Me (Taylor’s Version)”.

“You Belong with Me (Taylor’s Version)” Lyrics Meaning and Review of the Song

In the song’s release notes, Taylor Swift revealed the real-life experience that inspired her to write this song;

I walked into the writing session with Liz Rose and I said… I have this idea. I had heard a friend of mine talking to his girlfriend and he was completely on the defensive saying, “No baby… I had to hang up really quickly… I tried to call you back right away… Of course I did. I love you. Over all! Baby, I’m so sorry. She was yelling at him! I felt so bad for him at the time.

So I found the first line “You’re on the phone with your girlfriend, she’s upset, she’s making fun of something you said”, and I ran that into the story that I’m in love with him and that he should be with me instead of her. It just became that whole picture. It was really fun for us to write the line, “She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts.”

In 2012, Taylor Swift watched the music video for “You Belong with Me” and reacted and gave behind-the-scenes information on the video.

Throughout the song’s lyrics, nerdy Taylor Swift talks about how she’s in love with the guy who’s in love with the popular girl in school. She contrasts her features with the popular girl and thinks about all the reasons why he can’t have a popular guy like him.

However, nerdy Taylor also knows that popular Taylor doesn’t like her the way she does. The popular Taylor is probably in this relationship for “popularity” points. This is why they argue frequently.

And you got a smile that could light up this whole town
Haven’t seen her in a while since she knocked you down

Nerdy Taylor understands he’s not happy with his popular girlfriend. She doesn’t treat him the way he should be treated. Although he says he’s fine, nerdy Taylor knows he’s not. In the clip, nerdy Taylor and the boy are seen next door neighbors. They are therefore friends. She can see him arguing with his girlfriend on the phone through her bedroom window.

But nerdy Taylor Swift has no confidence in telling her how she feels. She looks nothing like the girl he’s dating right now. She is popular, prettier, wears high heels and the Cheer Captain. On the other hand, the nerdy Taylor is not so popular, always prettier, wears sneakers and sits on the stands, mixed with the crowd.

However, the story doesn’t have a sad ending, at least in the clip. The guy catches his girlfriend flirting with another guy in front of the whole school. So when nerdy Taylor makes a rare prom (?) Appearance, the guy realizes that what he was looking for was always right next to him! He fires his popular girlfriend and takes nerdy Taylor to the dance floor.

“You Belong with Me” tells the classic high school love triangle between a guy, the popular girl and the nerdy girl.
