“This Love” is the eleventh track from Taylor’s fifth studio album “1989” released on October 27, 2014. The song has a very enchanting melody, though singing about loving and losing.

“This Love” is the only track from the album “1989” written entirely by Taylor Swift. Nathan Chapman and Taylor are co-producers on the track. Taylor originally wrote this track as a poem, but ended up being a song on his album. According to a Tumblr post, Taylor referred to this song as; “The last time I wrote a poem that ended up being a song I was writing in my journal and writing about something that had happened in my life – that was about a year ago – and I just wrote this very, very short poem, it said “This love is good / this love is bad / this love has come back from the dead / these hands must have let go / and this love has come back to me “and I just wrote it down and closed the book and put it back on my nightstand [and I was like] “meh that was fun, little short poem” and then all of a sudden in my head I just started to hear this melody coming up and then I realized it was going to be a song.

In an interview with PopCrush, Taylor Swift admitted that “This Love” was one of her favorite tracks on “1989” and that she continues to repeat the song.

The moody tune is endowed with lyrics that speak of a love that keeps coming and going, not necessarily with just one partner. Every time she thinks she has found this one, turmoil occurs and the love fades away.

In the song’s opening verse, Taylor uses some appropriate metaphors to describe the emotions surrounding whether or not falling in love. “Clear blue waters” resemble calm, clarity, beauty and confidence. These are the emotions of falling in love. Taylor also describes the same environment in a situation of distress to resemble the calamities of the breakup.

In the chorus of “This Love,” Taylor explains that there is no surefire way to know what love is like with a person without taking the plunge with them. It is only when you are completely immersed in the water that you will know if love is good or bad. So, there’s no shame in having a “lost ex-lover list” looking for that one!

However, Taylor Swift does not try to undermine the seriousness of falling in love with a person. In the second chorus, she also admits that each fallout leaves a permanent scar on her soul. The choirs also repeat that nothing should be forced. If anything has to happen, it will. She talks about giving up her love when needed, and if he comes back, maybe it will be.
