Taylor Swift – I Bet You Think About Me Ft. Chris Stapleton | Lyrics Meaning Explained

“I Bet You Think About Me” is the twenty-sixth track from Taylor Swift’s re-recorded album “Red (Taylor’s Version)” released in 2021. This song From The Vault is about the aftermath of a relationship. The song includes vocals from Chris Stapleton.

Taylor Swift re-recorded and released her 2012 album “Red” after a spinoff with her then-label Big Machine. As painful as it was for Taylor, it gives us some new tracks that she wrote for the ‘Red’ album but never made it into it. In the 2021 re-release of ‘Red (Taylor’s Version)’, we’re fortunate enough to have some of these gems from the past. “Just a friendly reminder that I never thought it was possible to go back and redo my previous work, discovering lost works of art and forgotten gems along the way, if you didn’t. had not emboldened. Red is about to be mine again, but it has always been ours. This evening, we are starting again ”, Taylor Swift wrote, announcing the album.

In “I Bet You Think About Me”, Taylor Swift sings the contrasts between her and this ex-lover. She couldn’t help but fall in love with him despite these differences. The heart wants what the heart wants. When the dopamine level wanes, the brain starts to activate, and that’s when you start to see things for what they are. Some allusions left in those lyrics point the song towards Taylor’s ex-lover Jake Gyllenhaal, who it dated and broke up with while recording the ‘Red’ album.

Taylor Swift discussed the song with Country radio; “‘I Bet You Think About Me’ is a song I wrote with Lori McKenna, who is one of my favorite singer-songwriters. I had always wanted to work with her. And I wrote this. with her at her house when I was playing Foxboro Stadium on the Speak Now tour [in June 2011]. We wanted this song to be like a comedy, ironic, funny, not caring what people think of your kind of breakup song because there are so many kinds of breakup songs out there on Red. Some of them are very sincere, others are very stoic, heartbreaking and sad. We wanted this to be the moment I was like, “I don’t care about anything.” And we wanted to make people laugh with it, and we wanted it to be kind of a drinking song, and I think that’s what it ended up being.

Taylor Swift “I Bet You Think About Me” Lyrics Song Meaning And Review

Verse 1

In the song’s first verse, Taylor Swift has another sleepless night. It’s 3 a.m. and his mind rushes to where he is and what he’s doing. And naturally, she thinks he’s doing great because she hasn’t heard from him since they broke up. Taylor imagines him already moved on. He already has a better wife in his bed. A classy woman from a wealthy family to whom Taylor cannot compare.

Verse 2

Taylor shares how she tried to bridge the gap between her education in Tennessee and such education in town. Taylor tried for the sake of their relationship, but she often felt like an outcast within those high society circles. They also noticed his upbringing in his country.

Fantasy people have fantasy problems. These upper echelon circles sit around sipping wine and discussing the meaning of life. This is a question that scholars have addressed and failed for centuries. These people think they have understood life. They talk about that book or podcast they stumbled upon that “literally” saved their life. And everyone seems to have read this book except Taylor. Sitting away from these discussions, Taylor was living his life, or at least trying to live it.

Taylor Swift bet her ex is thinking of her. But she definitely thinks of him. She wants to believe that she left the same effect on her ex-lover.

I bet you couldn’t believe
When you realized that I’m harder to forget than to leave

It’s easy to leave and hard to forget – it’s universal. But Taylor must be wondering why she hasn’t heard from him since the split. Was it easy for him to forget too?

Verse 3

In the third verse of “I Bet You Think Of Me,” Taylor talks more about the contrasting characteristics of their upbringing, which she believes may have ultimately caused them to go their separate ways.

You grew up in a gated community with a silver spoon
Beverly Hills glamorous, shiny and luminous
I was raised on a farm, no it wasn’t a mansion

Taylor says this boy was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was born into wealth and fancy people. He was a Hollywood boy from the start. Taylor specifically mentions the city of Beverly Hills, California. Jake Gyllenhaal was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and was born into a well-to-do family. Taylor Swift, meanwhile, was born and raised a farm girl in Tennessee. She enjoyed the starlight while her ex took advantage of the fluorescent lights. Taylor enjoyed the smell of fresh grass and flowers while her ex endured the expensive scents. Taylor was free to become whoever she wanted, Jake was born to be a movie star.

Verse 4

In the song’s fourth verse, Taylor admits it was easy to fall in love with this guy. Maybe her star qualities, smirk, wavy hair, and macho speech swept Taylor away. But reality sets in at some point.

You laughed at my dreams, rolled your eyes at my jokes

Taylor’s ex-lover laughed at her for chasing her dream of becoming a singer, which is quite ironic since he comes from a celebrity lifestyle himself. Soon they realized that they had no emotional connection at any level to maintain this relationship.

Taylor Swift is sort of pretty confident that her ex-lover still thinks of her and misses her. Maybe their short-lived relationship burned hard in their bones.

Taylor laughs at his ego; “Sir. Higher Thinking. If Taylor talks about Jake, you can see that the way he behaves correlates with this nickname. The boy needed some space with her at the end. He was too sophisticated to be locked up.

Taylor knows he suffers from the realization that the love he was looking for was the love he had already lost. But there is no recovery now. He can only try to block these thoughts and try to move on.

Verse 5

In the song’s fifth and final verse, Taylor Swift sings what her ex-lover missed. He had a chance to be happy forever, but he let it slip through his fingers. Now he has to live his life in fear of becoming irrelevant, growing old and wondering if he would find true love again. None of this would have mattered if he was in love.

More contrasting features follow; he loves indie music, he wears organic shoes (what ?!), sits on a million dollar couch, and a on.

I bet you mean me when you say
“Oh my god she’s crazy she wrote a song about me”

Jake Gyllenhaal or whoever talks about that song is now forever etched in musical history. This song, along with “All Too Well (10 minute version)” is most likely about the same person and most likely will air on the radio and stream. The subject of the song is more than likely to hear this and will probably drive them crazy. Taylor will live forever in his memory and his reason.
