ROSÉ – On The Ground | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

ROSÉ is the second BLACKPINK member to go solo after JENNIE, and we’re not all happy that she did. ROSÉ’s first solo material released in 2021 is a two-track single album titled “R.” And in this article, we take a closer look at one of the songs called “On The Ground”.

ROSÉ released their first solo project, a two-single album on March 12, 2021. The two tracks on the album are “On The Ground” and “Gone”. Both tracks are in English and have their own music videos. In a press release, ROSÉ spoke to work on this album; “I wanted to put my most honest self into the album. While preparing the album, I had to look back a lot at myself. I learned that I am a person who heals through music.

In “On The Ground” we find a humble ROSÉ that speaks of being grounded. As a member of KPOP supergroup BLACKPINK, ROSÉ reached heights unlike most artists in their lifetime. While ROSÉ is extremely happy with where she is right now, she also realizes that what she is looking for in life is not in the clouds, but has been within her all along.

“On The Ground” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review

In a promotional interview, ROSÉ talked about the inspiration behind the song;

Basically the song is kind of about looking for answers in life for a purpose in life, and I feel like people, especially these days, can relate to that, sometimes when you’re still going that way, you kind of forget to take care of what matters most to you, and it’s just a song about everything we need is already inside of us.

In the first verse of the song, ROSÉ gives insight into her life before fame. She says she lived in cheap, run-down apartments with holes in the walls and only a mattress in the bedroom. But she always had a vision for her life. And envisioning your goals is the first step to manifesting them.

BLACKPINK’s 2016 debut wasn’t the most groundbreaking news in music. However, the group gained traction quite quickly and rose to prominence as international artists around 2020. And their debut studio album “THE ALBUM” peaked at number two in the US, UK and in the Australian music charts. By 2020, BLACKPINK as a group is estimated to be worth around $35 million, and ROSÉ is estimated to have a net worth of $8 million.

However, in the lyrics, ROSÉ says that “You find out that your gold is just plastic.” When you have enough wealth, you tend to realize that this wealth only has a very short lifespan. They can only do so much to make you happy. The real goal in life of any person should be to be happy. Although in today’s world money plays a big role in achieving this goal, it is certainly not everything. The number of global superstars who abruptly ended their lives is proof of this.

Taking care of yourself is more important than anything in the world.

I worked all my life
Just to get high, just to realize
All I need is on the
All I need is on the ground

In the song’s chorus, ROSÉ sings about how she gave it her all to become the superstar she is today. She is on top of the world. But “happiness” is where it started – on the pitch!

In the song’s second verse, ROSÉ mentions a “you” she doesn’t want to part with. It’s probably a reference to herself, that girl with big dreams. She says she doesn’t want to part with this person, not for the shiniest diamonds the world has to offer.

This is an important message that we should all keep close to ourselves!
