Queen – Love of My Life (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

The unprecedented band-Queen, known for being the greatest band to conquer rock music, continues to show off their musical versatility in the song “Love of My Life.” This ballad is considered one of Queen’s finest works in her diverse portfolio. Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury returns from rock and performs this serenade song in a display of his unimaginable vocal prowess.

“Love of My Life” is included in one of the best-selling rock albums – Queen’s “A Night at the Opera” from 1975. This album is also home to one of the most revered rock songs of all time – ” Bohemian Rhapsody”. In the original version of the album, Freddie Mercury plays the piano while performing the song with other members on different instruments, while on a live stage, this song is performed with Brian May on guitar and Freddie not performing than singing.

“I hate this thing of trying to recreate the albums on stage. We sometimes change deliberately. Look at ‘Love Of My Life’, for example. On record, I play the piano on it, but on stage, it’s just Brian who playing the guitar and me singing, because it works better on stage like that. -Freddie Mercury

“Love of My Life” is about Mary Austin, the true love of Freddie Mercury’s life. His true passion for Mary Austin is evident in every rendition of this Queen song.

Entirely written by Freddie Mercury himself, this song is a confessional about his love and affection for Mary Austin.

Who is Mary Austin?

Mary Austin was another ordinary girl, born in 1951 in London, UK. She met Brian May in college and dated him for a short time. Brian May then formed a motley group at university with Roger Taylor. They were soon introduced to Freddie Mercury who changed the band’s name to “Queen”. Thus began the relationship between Mary Austin and Freddie Mercury. In 1973, they moved in together, but never married. They lived together for seven years, and according to an interview with Freddie’s mother, Jer Bulsara, carried out by The Telegraph, Mary Austin worked two children named Richard and Jamie, with no biological connection to Freddie. He was the godfather of Marie’s two children. Even after Mary and Freddie broke off their relationship, they said they remained close friends until Freddie died in 1991. Mary Austin was passed on to Mercury’s sprawling mansion in west London.

Review of the lyrics and meaning of the song “The love of my life”

Verse 1

Freddie Mercury could talk about a time when Mary Austin left her life. If we take a look at their relationship timeline, sources confirm that the two met in 1970 and moved in together in 1973. In 1980, Freddie Mercury confessed to Mary that he had been continuously unfaithful to her , which led to their estrangement. “Love of My Life” was written in 1975, which leads us to believe that these two have had their share of ups and downs in their relationship.

Freddie Mercury was obsessed with Mary Austin, but that couldn’t stop him from forming relationships with other partners, especially men. He repeatedly calls her the love of his life, and the tone of this song leads us to believe he really means it.

Freddie Mercury begs her to return his love. Mary Austin had played a major role in Freddie’s life during the band’s toughest times as well as during their peak. She had been a major source of strength and inspiration in Freddie’s life and music.

Verse 2

Freddie Mercury talks about an apparent, possibly short-lived and undocumented breakup. However, he begs her to come back in this emotional outcry.

Freddie Mercury knows she’s not coming back. He assures her that she will remember all the good times even after their relationship ends. Freddie says that even though they are not together, he will still love her until she dies. We can only assume this has remained true to its last breath.

Queen’s “Love of My Life” is a classic tribute to love. There have been covers of this song over the years, but nothing beats Freddie Mercury singing with the true passion of Mary Austin who he wrote this song for.
