“jealousy, jealousy” is the ninth track from Olivia Rodrigo’s 2021 album “Sour.” In the song, Olivia sings about how insecure she feels comparing her to the benchmarks of perfection . Her falling out with her ex-boyfriend probably didn’t help either.
Olivia Rodrigo has announced her debut studio album ‘Sour’ following the massive success she achieved with her debut single ‘Driver’s License’. She followed up this success with another single “deja vu”. Announcing the new album, she commented “alsoooooo if *cked around and made an album. i’m so proud of it.
In an interview with Nylon magazine, Olivia talked about the real inspirations behind this song; “I was super obsessed with social media. I was always looking for things that would hurt my feelings and comparing myself to everyone. I felt like my life was just what I showed others I didn’t feel like my life was any deeper than my Instagram feed. It’s a really unsettling mindset as a teenager. And so I guess I wanted to write a song about it. That isn’t sad or “Oh, I don’t feel enough,” it’s “Oh, my God, I’m so jealous.” It’s ironic, and kind of funny to me. But the song sounds are why we put it on the record. There’s this piano in the bridge that’s so convoluted and almost atonal. Sometimes it just doesn’t go with the music and it’s so chaotic.

“jealousy, jealousy” Menaing Lyrics and Song Review
In the first verse, we hear Olivia being quite hard on herself seeing all the beautiful girls her age around her. Girls with perfect white teeth and perfect bodies. Olivia knows he doesn’t have one.
However, this lyric alone deserves an award;
I know their beauty is not my lack
The line suggests that just because someone else looks good doesn’t mean you’re not. Beauty is subjective, much like everything else in life. If you can’t see your own beauty, how would you want anyone else to? !
Olivia Rodrigo speaks clearly about the influence of social media on today’s younger generation. Everyone’s highlights are posted on social media, especially on platforms such as Instagram. Nobody posts pictures of their bad days. So naturally, it looks like they have it all: the looks, the money, the glitz and the glamour. Naturally, you also tend to compare their highlights to your day-to-day life. It’s never a good comparison. You will only lower yourself.
In the second verse, Olivia continues to compare and contrast what “they” have and what she doesn’t. Olivia might be a multi-millionaire right now, but she could still find a thousand things someone else has that she doesn’t. For example, her ex-boyfriend!
Social media influencers have a hold on most kids today. They have become idols and role models. Idolizing for being independent and successful like these influencers is not a bad thing. However, comparing them to your life right now and putting yourself down is very bad. Jealousy is a very bad habit to develop. There is simply no exit from this pit once you have fallen into it.
