NF gets very real in his latest single “When I Grow Up” released today with a music video. He touches on the subject that it’s extremely difficult to become a great rapper in the industry while still being real and genuine.

“When I Grow Up” follows two other singles, “The Search” and “WHY” from her fourth studio album titled “The Search”. NF posted a clip of the video on June 26 before releasing the track on June 27, 2019.

“When I Grow Up” is a track about NF’s childhood dream of becoming a great rapper. At the start of the clip, we see a circle of kids confessing to what they want to be in the future. Among future doctors, engineers, ballet teachers, NF’s dream was to be a rapper. At least he made his childhood dream come true.

But the hard part begins now! Being a rapper, genuine and real, gets you very few likes and streams on the media. It’s not just spotlights and sold-out crowds every time. But NF is happy to do what he does best. He even admits that his lyrics might not be as good as those of other rappers. And he hopes to get better.

NF also discusses the “normal” way of growing up – studying well, entering college, taking on massive debt, and finding a job that doesn’t pay the debt. In its logic, this patter does not make much sense. He prefers to pursue his passion and lead an “average” life, where he is able to cook a meal on his own, and not have to resort to buying dollar dishes from fast food restaurants.

In the music video for “When I Grow Up,” we see very little of the glory of being a rapper. For the most part, we see NF being a garbage collector and janitor to support himself. But towards the end of the video, we see how far NF has come so far. He sells stadiums!

His last wish is: “Yeah, I might not be the best at it / But I guarantee you I’ll really die.
