Mike Posner’s “Buried In Detroit” Gets a Big Sean Touch (Review)

“Buried In Detroit” was released in 2015 on the 4 track “The Truth EP”. However, after a year, the same track gets a facelift with Mike Posner’s dear friend Big Sean on Mike’s new album “At Night, Alone” out May 6th. Both are Detroit-based artists and “Buried In Detroit” is a nice thank you to their hometown.

Lucas Lowe’s “Buried In Detroit” remix comes with a lyric video. Watch it below.

“Buried In Detroit” Lyrics Review

Verse 1 gives some general information about Mike Posner.

I am a writer and a lover
I’m a midwestern musician
And I’ve been to many places
But I’ll end where I started
I took classes in Carolina
I have smoking joints
And now they know my name in Paris

Mike Posner is a songwriter. He writes most of his songs himself, including this one. Detroit belongs to the Midwest region of the United States. Mike Posner has been around the world. From the United States, from the United Kingdom to Asia, Mike Posner has made a name for himself. Her latest single “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” is still trending on the charts. He went to Duke University in North Carolina. He loved life. All the glitz and glamor aside, he says he’ll always end up where he started, in his hometown of Detroit.

But I’ll be buried in Detroit
Next to my father, and my father’s father too
I lived in New York
But baby it’s no substitute
Not for my hometown
This place that people avoid
I made love in every town
But I’ll be buried in Detroit

Mike Posner says he will be buried in Detroit or rather he wants to be buried in Detroit. It’s out of love for his hometown. This is where his father will be buried, and his grandfather was buried. Mike Posner now lives in Los Angeles, but he used to live in New York. I guess the two cities do not replace his hometown. Mike Posner says he’s traveled to almost every city and probably had sex in every city too. But his heart still beats for Detroit.

I don’t claim to be a prophet, I just say what I think
I try to tell it like it is and sometimes God makes it rhyme
I love my songs like I love my women
Honest and direct
You see, I fucked up in Stockholm
But I’ll be buried in Detroit

Mike Posner tells what needs to be said with his lyrics. He doesn’t have to be a prophet to convey his messages well, because he speaks the truth. Mike Posner’s songs have a variable rhythm, perhaps because God makes them rhyme. He says he likes his songs and honest, straightforward women. That’s probably why he’s not married yet. I don’t know exactly what happened in Stockholm, but he did a tour there. But he will still be buried in his hometown.

In the remix, Big Sean joins “Buried In Detroit” at this point.

Man, I always kept it just knowing it would come back to me
Even when my hunger prevailed over strategy
And I’ll pray to God like I hope you got a card for me
Up at 5 in the morning like nobody wants it as bad as me

Big Sean is a self-taught artist. He speaks here of karma (“it would come back to me”). He kept his good and fair lifestyle even when the bigger one beat his plans and goals. He often prayed to God to show him a way, when he woke up at 5am working on his goals.

Big Sean continues…

I guess hunger kills you or gives you energy
Motor city, man, I been a driver
Detroit’s young legend, I swear I inspired the city
And bought….just to solidify it

I love Big Sean’s motivational lyrical work. He showed it in “Blessings” with Drake and now he’s showing it in “Buried In Detroit” with Mike Posner. Big Sean says hunger can either weaken you and kill you, or it can motivate you to work harder and not go hungry one day. Motor City is a name that was used for Detroit when the city of Detroit was the largest manufacturing city in the United States.

D-boy, D-boy, that’s how I was raised
Head up and get the town going, forever my ways
Ma and I started the charity to give children clarity
And go deeper than the foundations we laid
Thanksgiving parade, got carried through town
And then I hope to get married in town
And after that, I hope to be buried in the city
Even when I’m gone you still gon’ hear me around town

D-boy could refer to “dope boy” or drug dealer, which is a common problem in Detroit and Big Sean says that’s how they were raised. And with other artists, Big Sean brought to light the dark alleys of the city of Detroit.

The two artists want only one thing: to rest in peace in their city.

“Buried In Detroit” ends with another round of the chorus and we get a little closer to Mike Posner’s heart. I think Mike Posner has become more and more open about himself with his latest songs. I can’t wait for the ‘At Night, Alone’ album to see what more it has to offer.
