“Fallen Fruit” is the fifth track from Lorde’s 2021 album “Solar Power”. In keeping with the theme of the album, this song is about the shattered state of this planet Earth that has been handed down to us by generations of pollutants before us. The gift of nature is being plundered and destroyed by humanity and it may be too late to reverse what we have done.
Lorde has announced their third studio album “Solar Power” which will be released on August 20, 2021. Prior to the new single, Lorde released singles such as “Solar Power” and “Stoned at the Nail Salon”. The album is produced by Jack Antonoff alongside Lorde. Lorde spoke of the inspiration behind her new album in an interview; “Obviously, during the creation of this album, I dived deeply into the culture of the 60s, Flower Child. I wanted to understand community life, get out of society and try to start over.
On Apple Music, Lorde explained the meaning of this song; “But I just had this moment where I was like:” This is the great loss of our lives and it will be what will define all of our lives and our world will be unrecognizable to my children… It is I who describe a escape to somewhere safe that will take place in the future when our world becomes uninhabitable.

Lorde “Fallen Fruit” Lyrics Song Meaning And Review
Lorde speaks directly to the generations of humans who came before us about the destruction of the only house we know of in this universe. There is no planet hopping yet and Mother Earth is dying. Earth-shattering acts of human progress have caused irreparable damage to planet Earth and we are now witnessing the devastating effects of these acts.
Countless forest fires around the world, floods, earthquakes, melting polar ice caps, imbalances in biodiversity, climate change, disease, are just a few of the devastating effects of human developments that we observe today. We do not know what will happen in the next decades and in the time of our children. It is not improving for Earth for sure.
We had no idea the dreams we had were way too big
Much too big
In the name of science and development, man has cut ties with nature and did not stop there. We have started to take control of nature and even to overtake it. But nature is a force that we puny humans cannot even imagine understanding. A tsunami in 2004 claimed the lives of 230,000 people in South Asia. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has claimed 4 million lives worldwide and continues to count. A small earthquake in Haiti killed more than 1,900 people and affected 3 million more. A small meteor the size of a car could essentially wipe out humanity on this planet.
Through the halls of splendor where all the apple trees grew
You will let us dance on the fallen fruits
The fruit also refers to the “forbidden fruit” of the Bible, which is said to have given wisdom to Adam and Eve who consumed it. Adam and Eve were cursed to live a mortal life for this sin by God, and the wisdom we freed from this sin truly became sin for our own existence. Oh, the irony of knowledge and wisdom!
In the last verse of the song, Lorde asks the question “How can I love what I know I’m going to lose?” ” referring to the dying Earth. The point is, Earth does not die on its own. It takes with it all its inhabitants. We are really in the spirit of Mother Nature and she is not happy at all.
