Juice WRLD – Lucid Dreams (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“12 Weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 and Juice WRLD’s ‘Lucid Dreams’ doesn’t seem to be slowing down. The song is currently in 7th place while it peaked at 3rd place at one point. The song describes the mental torture that a person suffers after breaking up. Juice WRLD explains this situation as a lucid dreaming state. By definition, lucid dreaming occurs when the dreamer is aware that they are dreaming, in which case they are able to fully experience the dream to its full effect.

“Lucid Dreams” appeared on Juice WRLD’s “JuiceWRLD 9 9 9” mixtape released on June 15, 2017. After a year, the song gained popularity when the song “All Girls Are the Same” by Juice WRLD was released on Cole Bennet’s YouTube channel.

Juice WRLD took to Genius.com to comment on his comments on the song;

“The day I wrote Lucid Dreams, it was a regular day, just a regular routine. I would sit in my family room and play beats on the stereo, just write to them, so yeah, nothing wrong. – genius.com

The lyrics to “Lucid Dreams” are not that complicated. However, the song tells a valid story throughout the song.

For Genius.com, Juice WRLD said the following is what he gets out of the song;

“Actually a few different things, I mean, people who have suffered from sleep paralysis would understand the context of ‘Lucid Dream’ more than others, but the message I want people to know is, just be aware. of your feelings. Really, just be aware of your feelings, and I think that’s about what it’s done for people, in a way. genius.com

Lyrics review and meaning of the song “Lucid Dreams”

The chorus of “Lucid Dreams” jumps straight into Juice WRLD’s warped mind right after he broke up. It endures sleep paralysis – a state where you can’t sleep, and sleep depravity makes you see and feel dark things. He says he sees shadows of her in the room. Obviously, she is not physically present in the room, so we have to attribute these hallucinations to her sleep paralysis.

His mind is quite twisted and he is not sure about his feelings as well. He loves her so much that he can’t close his eyes and sleep. For this torture, he hates her too. For him, there is simply no looking back on the love he gave.

She turned out not to be what he expected from her. Differences in expectations in a relationship often lead to deplorable results. We just have to remember that “expectations” are our thing, not our partner’s thing. The partner is not bound by anything to live up to your expectations for him.

When the going got tough, she moved on and he didn’t. He expected everything he wanted from a girl who wasn’t all he wanted. He believes he’s the best guy for her, but even we have doubts about that.

Juice WRLD has taken breakup so hard that it compares post-breakup life to death. And in the next line, he confesses that the girl despised him too (probably towards the latter part of their relationship). So he thinks she got what she wanted from the start. But he alone dug his own grave.

Juice WRLD is quite open about taking pills in the song “Lucid Dreams”. He took pills to numb his pain. But he regrets those decisions now. He knows his problem is in his head, and no matter how many pills he takes, the problem will not go away. Drugs are never a permanent solution to a problem. The drugs made her problems worse, as these drug-infused hallucinations caused her to lose control of reality and her lucid dreams. He was helpless in real life and in his own head.

“Lucid dreams” is when you realize that you are in a dream. Some are even able to control their dreams in this state. But, what Juice WRLD went through was something else. He could not “move anything” in his lucid dreams, which is called “sleep paralysis”.

She was his world, to the point that he even imagined a marriage with her. Maybe she didn’t want the same. Good expectations from the wrong people lead to disasters.

Friends could be your saving grace on most occasions. However, we are too blind for our own good when we are in love, that we forget to listen to our friends. Usually, an outside person can see a couple’s situation better.

Evil comes in all shapes, sizes and looks. Juice WRLD learned this the hard way. An innocent face and a cute smile probably made him so addicted that he wanted his life with her. But she had different intentions. Maybe, in his story, Juice WRLD is the bad guy …

WRLD thinks she had flaws when he met her, yet he graciously loved her and saved her. But in return, she broke her heart to pieces, never to be mended.

These lyrics contain pieces of the song from here and there, as well as its distorted thought process.

An interesting twist at the end of the song is that what he previously believed – that he was the better guy she picked after their breakup, changed by the end. He says “you found another… better…” as opposed to the previous words “You found another one, but I’m the best…” Does he finally accept the reality of the situation? If so, there might be hope for WRLD.

“Lucid Dreams” is about one of the most difficult breakups we’ve ever seen in a song in recent history. It’s unclear if Juice WRLD took this from personal experiences, but it sounds terribly realistic and personal.
