Joyner Lucas – Devil’s Work (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

The 30-year-old Massachusetts-based rapper has been working on his second studio album ‘ADHD’ for a long time. He released the first single “I Love” in October 2018 and returns with a brand new, possibly controversial single, “Devil’s Work”.

In the new clip for “Devil’s Work,” we find Joyner Lucas in an empty church, holding a copy of The Bible and asking serious questions of God himself. He assures us that he is not threatening God, but is simply looking for answers. But these questions, even God might not have answers! Joyner is therefore led to believe that these actions are not those of God, but of the devil himself, hence the unique title.

The song has already turned heads. Rihanna called the song a “culture moment”, while Tomi Lahren, whose name is mentioned in the song, called it “really disgusting” and “sick”. Joyner Lucas retweeted the two.

“Devil’s Work” is primarily a question of why good souls, especially in the music business, are taken from us. Joyner names Tupac Shakur, BIGGIE, XXXTentacion, Big Pun as people who should be on Earth to continue the good fight they are fighting. Joyner wishes God had taken Donald Trump (President of the United States) and Suge Knight (alleged links to the Tupac murder). Joyner questions how this “cherry picking” works because he sees no justice in the way the world works, even when it comes to death. Tupac was shot in 1996, The Notorious BIG was shot in 1997, and XXXTentacion was shot in Florida in June 2018.

Joyner also wonders why Selena Quintanilla-Pérez and R&B singer and actress Aaliyah Haughton were killed on the cusp of their stardom. Selena was shot dead by the president of her fan club in 1995 and Aaliyah was killed in a plane crash in 2001.

Joyner Lucas addresses more names than he would have liked to swap instead of others that were blown away. Malcolm X (a civil rights activist) to return and take R. Kelly to hell. R. Kelly stained her name after allegedly being brought to justice for several cases of pre-teen sexual abuse. Lil Snupe is another rapper who Lucas says deserves a second chance because he was shot in 2013. He also wishes Eric Holder (Nipsey Hussle murder suspect) had died in place of Eric Wright AKA Eazy- E who was a key figure in rap music. . Eazy-E died of complications from AIDS.

Joyner Lucas doesn’t let anyone forget that innocent people like Trayvon Martin, 17, shot dead by a man named George Zimmerman in 2012. In 2013, the charges against Zimmerman were dropped.

Nipsey Hussle’s death on March 31, 2019 left the rap community in shock. He suffered several fatal gunshots in South Los Angeles and died on the spot. Joyner also named “The Marathon,” a series of albums and his own brand of clothing by Nipsey Hussle.

Other notable names mentioned by Joyner are Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson.

Unsurprisingly, Joyney Lucas targets two Fox News personalities. The first is Tomi lahren, who proclaimed himself an activist against hip-hop culture. The second is Laura Ingraham, who laughed and mocked Nipsey Hussle’s death as she reported news about it.

Joyner Lucas remembers his “blood flowing” thinking about all these unfair things happening in the world and asks God why he is not intervening. He believes the good guys are taken away early and the crooks are left out. A bigger question is if this is the norm, why is he still alive!

We think Joyner Lucas is asking some interesting questions about this new single “Devil’s Work”. Tupac, BIGGIE and many others have paid the price of their lives for speaking out against the system. Is Joyner on a similar path?
