J. Cole has announced his brand new studio album will be released in 2021, and “interlude” is the first glimpse of what’s to come. The two-minute track serves as an interlude to the album as well as the first single from it. On the track, J. Cole sings about a range of topics from successes to failures to personal struggles.
J. Cole announced the release of his sixth studio album ‘The Off-Season’ on May 14, 2021. The announcement was made just a week before the release as he mentions that he always wanted to release an album out of nowhere ; “I figured I’d drop the album out of hand.” However, there is nothing rushed about this album, as Cole himself says. “Just know that it was years of preparation.” This is J. Cole’s follow-up project to his 2018 album “KOD”.
The track samples work by one of the track’s producers, Tommy Parker. “Interlude” will be the only single released before the album’s release.

“Interlude” Lyrics Meaning and Song Review
In the song’s intro, J. Cole reminds us that he literally started at the bottom and worked his way up to the top. His personal story is filled with struggles – his father having abandoned him at a young age. As an African American on the streets of Fayetteville, North Carolina, he also endured his fair share of racial discrimination. However, he was a smart kid and got a 4.2 GPA in high school and graduated college with a 3.8 GPA. As luck would have it, that wasn’t enough to land him a suitable job. After graduating, J. Cole worked a variety of part-time jobs in Fayetteville, including newspaper ad salesman, bill collector, file clerk, and kangaroo mascot at an ice rink.
It wasn’t until 2009, after two mixtapes, that J. Cole managed to catch Jay Z’s attention and signed with the Roc Nation label. The rest of the trip ended afterwards.
Today, Grammy-winning artist J. Cole is truly at the height of his career. He is aware of this but chooses not to consider himself impervious to change. He knows he can always swing back and forth, up or down. But for a person who comes from nothing, there are very few things that can break them. he is prepared for whatever life throws at him.
In the single verse of the song, J. Cole addresses several topics. An important topic is gun violence on the streets of the United States, especially in areas where he grew up. He remembers how a mother crying that her son had been shot had become an all too frequent sighting. Although he wants to end this madness, he is happy to have known the worst of society. He was traumatized almost every week, but it also often made him stronger. He had one goal in mind every waking minute: to get there. So he kept grinding until he did.
Next, J. Cole hints at the album he’s about to release. He expects “The Off-Season” album to do well next summer. He knows that many artists won’t even be able to match his sales figures even if they release double-disc albums (twice as many songs).
J. Cole returns to racial discrimination in the United States. He reminds us how the death toll of African Americans continues to rise every week. J. Cole calls them “voiceless”, probably because they are ignored and denied fair opportunities in most areas of society. This “system” forces most of them to become petty criminals, which results in them being shot in the streets. J. Cole brings up the friend of a friend who sold more “cola” than the soda industry. “Coke” is slang for cocaine.
J. Cole ends the verse by paying tribute to two artists we’ve recently lost – Pimp C and Nipsey Hussle. Both died at the age of 33. And J. Cole draws parallels between these deaths and the death of Jesus Christ, who is also said to have died at the age of 33. J. Cole knows that the three of them went to heaven. after their passage.
J. Cole is preparing his fans for what is about to be released from his next album. And it’ll be fine by the looks of just “the interlude”. Let us know what you think of this track in the comments below.
