Halsey – Girl is a Gun | Lyrics Meaning Explained

“Girl is a Gun” is the fifth track from Halsey’s 2021 album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power”. In the song, Halsey appears to be talking about being free of all ties and enjoying his freedom. Halsey probably has very little recently with her boyfriend, her newborn baby and the album release.

Halsey released her fourth studio album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” on August 27, 2021. This is her follow-up project to her hit album “Manic” released in 2020. About the new album, Halsey mentioned “This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It happened by accident. I wasn’t trying to make a political record, or a record that drowned in its own depth – I was just writing about how I feel. The reason the album sort of has this horror theme is that this experience, in a way, has its horrors.

The song’s title, “girl is a gun,” generally alludes to the power and dangerousness of a girl, which in this case refers to Halsey herself. So, she subtly warns anyone who wants a piece of her to be extra careful. The title could also be a reference to the 1971 French western film, “Une aventure de Billy le Kid / A Girl is A Gun”, written and directed by French New Wave filmmaker Luc Moullet. The film follows the famous Western outlaw, Billy The Kid, who was an outlaw and gunman from the American Wild West, who killed eight men before being shot when he was 21.

Halsey “Girl is a Gun” Lyrics Song Meaning and Review

In the song’s first verse, Halsey seems to sing about how free she feels without having a constantly breathing partner down her neck. “Hands around the waist” occurs when two people perform a dance as a couple, often in a romantic manner. However, Halsey might not be inclined as such.

Halsey would much rather enjoy his freedom and free will than be killed by someone who is not on the same page as his.

It’s a hit in the dark, I’m not a walk in the park
I have just loaded with the security disabled

Halsey is not an easy plate to swallow. She sang about her destructive behavior in the album’s previous track, titled “Lilith”. So maybe Halsey can’t help but escalate any relationship into a world of destruction and toxicity.

In the song’s second verse, Halsey talks about her “baby.” We wouldn’t think she was talking about her newborn son Ender Ridley.

My new baby is testing me lately
Driving me crazy from morning till night
I can’t take it, I love it, I break it

For her baby or for her lover, these words fit the context perfectly. She could talk about a new lover in her life (which would be inaccurate as Halsey and her boyfriend Alev Aydin have been stable for over a year and have a baby together).

However, the theme of the song remains the same. It seems Halsey is more worried about her influence over these people than she brings into her life. She worries about “breaking them” with her nature.
