Halsey – Darling | Lyrics Meaning Explained

“Darling” is the seventh track from Halsey’s 2021 album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power”. The song is a lullaby for Halsey’s son, but maybe for anyone who needs some peace of mind.

Halsey released their fourth studio album “If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power” on August 27, 2021. It is their follow-up project to their hit album “Manic” released in 2020. About the new album, Halsey mentioned “This album is a concept album about the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth. It happened by accident. I wasn’t trying to make a political record, or a record that drowned in its own depth – I was just writing about how I feel. The reason the album sort of has this horror theme is that this experience, in a way, has its horrors.

In the song, Halsey carries her weakness on her shoulders and opens up a vulnerable side to us. However, she remains positive about seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for them and for their son. She seems to console their baby in these words, as she does on the last track of the album “Ya’aburnee”.

Halsey “Darling” Lyrics Song Meaning and Review

In the song’s first verse, Halsey becomes vulnerable about their dark times. She talks about the days when she felt hopeless, helpless and overwhelmed with emotions. These days absolutely break them down. It could be due to a lot of things going on in their life. ‘Doubleheader’ is a reference to suffering from bipolar disorder, which she admitted to on the previous album.

When Halsey says to try the drug she bought “instead” (of contemporary medicine), she might be referring to their music. Their music could also be their own savior. However, she goes on to say that this drug works a bit for them but that she misses it at the same time. Is Halsey talking about retirement?

Honey don’t cry
There is a place for me

Halsey calls the person “sweetheart,” one of the most endearing words for calling someone. Is she really talking to their son? Halsey’s assurance is that there is a place for them in this sweetheart’s life, no matter where she ends up or even when she’s been away from this world.

In the song’s second verse, Halsey draws parallels between their lives and what lies ahead for their son. Halsey remembers their broken home and how the little flowers that grew in cemeteries gave them hope. This line contrasts between life and death.

Halsey sings that she doesn’t know where she will be buried once she leaves this world. No matter where it would be, she assures their son that everything will always be fine.

Halsey also sings that there have been a lot of men who have tried to win their hearts over the years. But only their son could truly capture their hearts forever.

Until it’s time to see the light
I’ll do mine with you every night
