Ed Sheeran “Visiting Hours” Lyrics Song Meaning And Review

Verse 1

I wish the sky had visiting hours
So I might just show up and bring some good news

The whole premise of the song is based on “visiting hours” which are usually related to hospitals. Most hospitals have restrictions on the times families and friends can visit patients admitted to the hospital. These unlimited hours are called “visiting hours”.

Ed Sheeran takes this idea a step further and says he wanted visiting hours to visit Heaven to see his friend. Death is the only ticket to Heaven and it is permanent in nature. While Ed Sheeran doesn’t want this permanent route, he wishes he could have at least a few hours every now and then to reunite with his dear late friend.

Ed Sheeran fails to share updates on his newborn daughter with his friend. Ed has said that Michael Gudinski is like a father to him, which makes this loss much deeper than that of a musical partner.

In the song hook, Ed Sheeran imagines himself sitting next to his friend in Heaven. They share what is new in their life. One has the impression that everything will be fine during these brief hours that he spends with his friend.

Verse 2

In the song’s second verse, Ed Sheeran pursues the idea of visiting hours. He sings about how he would use those hours to soak up his wisdom about life, about how to raise his daughter. This shows us that Ed Sheeran had a very close and personal relationship with his friend.

Verse 3

In the song’s third and final verse, Ed Sheeran wishes he could send his friend out of heaven and bring him home, just like you would in a hospital. But, the sky is different, and death is permanent. He knows the answer he’s going to get from the angels. The answer is not that he can’t take it home, but that it has happened for the best. So Ed Sheeran has to take it and come home empty-handed.

Not so empty-handed though, he got a few hours of the best company he could ask for in this universe. Isn’t that what we all want in life ?!
