Ed Sheeran – Shape Of You (Lyrics Review & Song Meaning)

The second song released by Ed Sheeran for 2017 is called “Shape Of You” and it is a song to dance to. “Castle On The Hill” was more of a nostalgic return to life when Ed was young and “Shape Of You” takes a completely different turn. This is another track from Ed Sheeran’s upcoming 2017 album, possibly titled “Divide”.

“Shape Of You” is very subtly about a random connection, but Ed Sheeran veils the searing meaning of some sugar-coated lyrics. This track is more in line with his previous lyrical works such as “A Team” where the meaning was not quite apparent.

“Shape of You” won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards. The song also peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the charts in a dozen other countries, including UK, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Canada, Australia, etc. The song has also crossed over 10 million units sold in the US and over 5 million units sold in the UK, making it one of Ed Sheeran’s most successful commercial tracks.

This song is produced by Johnny McDaid and Steve Mac.

Review of the lyrics and meaning of the song “Shape Of You”

The song is basically about how the singer meets this girl in a bar and connects and falls in love with her and her body quite specifically. Dirty as it sounds, Ed’s lyrical skills come in handy to veil this song in a cloak where even a kid can dance to the beat.

Verse 1

The club is not the best place to find a lover
So the bar is where I go
Me and my friends at the table doing shots
Drink faster and then we talk slow
Come on and strike up a fair conversation with me
And believe me, I’ll give it a chance now
Take my hand, stop
Put Van The Man on the jukebox
And then we start to dance
And now I sing like

Ed Sheeran thinks clubs are no place to find a lover, it’s true. You can’t exactly find a “lover” in a club – maybe an affair, yes. And Ed clearly doesn’t want an affair. So he goes to a bar where things are calmer and more serene.

The singer sits with his friends having a drink and chatting. And he wants a girl to come up to the table and talk to him specifically and maybe he’ll give her a chance.

Van The Man is an Irish singer from the 70s. They play a song by this artist on the jukebox and start dancing. A perfect way to start a relationship. It wouldn’t have happened in a club – you’d just ruffle each other and maybe hook up and wake up in the morning and shamefully part ways.

Girl, you know I want your love
Your love was handmade for someone like me
Come on now, follow my example
I may be crazy, don’t mind
Say, man, let’s not talk too much
Take my waist and put that body on me
Come on now, follow my example
Come, come now, follow my example

Ed Sheeran professes his love for this girl. They may have met a short time ago, but they got on well. He thinks she’s made for him – just the right amount of beauty and madness and bodily perfection. The girl is really into him too. This is evident by the conversation they have, where she asks the boy not to talk too much and get in on the action.

The chorus of “Shape Of You” iterates the carnal pleasures…

I’m in love with your shape
We push and pull like a magnet
Although my heart also falls
I’m in love with your body
And last night you were in my room
And now my sheets smell like you
Discover something new every day
I’m in love with your body
I’m in love with your body
I’m in love with your body
I’m in love with your body
Discover something new every day
I’m in love with your shape

Simply put, this verse describes them having sex and it’s not everyday vanilla either. They are discovering more and more every day. Ed says they just connect or attract each other like magnets, so it must be pretty easy for the relationship.

The singer falls in love with her-all of her. I assume she’s witty and sexy because the singer falls in love with her body or her shape.

Verse 2 is where they take the relationship to the next level…

A week later we let the story begin
We go out on our first date
You and I are thrifty
So go all you can eat
Fill your bag and I fill a plate
We talk hours and hours about sweet and sour
And how is your family
Go and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat
Tell the driver to play the radio
And I sing like

A week after the start of this lucky meeting at the bar, they have their first real date. They’re not rich and they’re all okay with that. So they decide to go all-you-can-eat so they can literally eat whatever they want for a small amount of money. And they don’t just eat and leave, they also fill their bags to take food home.

They talk for hours and hours without getting tired of what everyone has to say. They talk about good (sweet) and bad (sour). It’s pretty rare these days. They take a cab home and kiss in the backseat like a normal couple would. They force the driver to play the radio too. Sounds like a pretty decent first date.

“Shape Of You” ends after the pre-chorus and the chorus repeats several times. This song is definitely different from its twin “Castle On The Hill” when it comes to song theme. But if Ed Sheeran expected to produce a dance track, he succeeded. Also, this song might add some sparkle to the tracklist as there will be more ballad-type songs in her upcoming album “Divide.”

We love this new music from Ed Sheeran and 2017 couldn’t have started better.
