Coldplay – Higher Power | Lyrics Meaning & Song Review

Coldplay is set to take over 2021 and the first signs of what’s to come were shown through their brand new single ‘Higher Power’. The song addresses themes of the singer’s love and faith.

Coldplay first teased the song on TikTok with a 26-second clip. The song was officially released on May 7, 2021, as the lead single from their yet to be titled 2021 album. It’s been their major project since Coldplay’s eighth studio album “Everyday Life” released in November 2019.

Along with the release of the next album, Coldplay even created a new alien language called Kaotican, complete with an alphabet. They have also created a brand new Alien Radio FM website which showcases this new language and links to a set of social media profiles created for Alien Radio FM. In the few weeks leading up to the song’s release, this mysterious alphabet appeared in several public places, as shown on their Instagram page.

Meaning of “Higher Power” lyrics and song review

Verse 1

In the first verse of the song, Chris Martin sings about how things don’t always go his way. These times are crushing him hard, and like everyone else, he too is feeling the pressures of everyday life. If your shoes are untied, the chances of tripping are extremely high. In the context of the song, it suggests things aren’t always smooth sailing.

Sometimes life can seem like a drag, especially in these times of a pandemic. Locked inside our homes, unable to meet our friends and family, and faced with the feeling of theft of our freedom. Chris Martin sings about how life can feel like a broken, repeated and out of tune record. He goes on to sing “I’m like a broken record” backwards, like a broken record would.

He’s waiting for a call…

From the sky above. The message he wants to hear is an encouragement to hold on. Never give up even when the whole world seems to be against you and the odds seem to be against you. The coming hour, day or week could change things for the better.

The song obviously carries a “sacred” feeling throughout. However, it’s also interesting that they entangled the theme of the album with extraterrestrial beings.

In the song’s chorus, the themes of spirituality and love begin to fade. The singer talks about how this person has some kind of higher power that he can’t understand. This higher power makes him sing and dance all day long. These resemble the actions of a man in love and also church events where singing and dancing are used as a form of praise.

Chris Martin also sings that he really wants to know this person. This applies equally in the two situations of a lover speaking of his partner and also of a devotee speaking of his saviour.

Verse 2

The second verse shifts gears lyrically. Chris Martin sings about the energy he gives off doing what he loves. His joy is electrifying and it’s something we’ve seen emanating from Chris Martin in his live gigs. He is full of energy and full of joy. He partially alludes to this higher power in which he so fondly believes.

Chris Martin also sings that he is lucky to be alive at the same time as this other person. While that might seem like it’s aimed at her love interest, we can also say that religions are alive in a way, too. And most of us consider that God, Jesus, the Prophet and other religious leaders are always around us.

In the last part of the song, Coldplay sings about how he was saved by a love song when he had been on his knees for so long. This is where the messages start to intertwine everywhere. Kneeling is a common practice in many religions for prayer. So the lyrics could mean that his prayers were answered in the form of a song and it opened his eyes. Kneeling is also a sign of abandonment and Chris Martin says this love song “saved” him from kneeling. Maybe he was following a faith blindly and something opened his eyes to the truth. It could also mean he was with the wrong person, broken inside for so long until the right person showed up and he was rescued. As such, these lyrics could be interpreted in different ways.
