Christmas Classics – Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

So far we have gone through some classic Christmas songs and carols such as “Jingle Bells”, “Silent Night” and “Twelve Days of Christmas”. In this article, we take a look at the history and significance of another world famous Christmas jingle “Santa Claus Comes to Town”.

The origin of “Santa Claus Is Comin ‘to Town” dates back to 1934, written by lyricists John Frederick Coots and Haven Gillespie. It was the same time that the world was suffering from the Great Depression. The song was meant to contain additional verses aimed at calming people’s minds during this time.

This Christmas song became an instant hit with high demand for sheet music, records and radio pieces. Due to this popularity, which resonates to this day, many artists have covered this song throughout history. The most notable cover versions are those of Frank Sinatra, Mariah Carey, Neil Diamond, The Jackson 5, Bruce Springsteen, The Temptations, Michael Buble and Andrea Bocelli.

This simple Christmas classic has only a chorus and a pre-chorus. Therefore, it takes an extra talent to perform it as a song in its own right. In the lyrics of the song, the singer addresses the masses and tries to console them that Santa Claus is about to visit their city.

The singer asks listeners to throw away all their worries as Santa Claus arrives in their city this Christmas time.

This idea is linked to folklore that Santa Claus rides his reindeer sleigh at night and falls into houses through the chimneys and leaves gifts for the whole family. But, of course, Santa Claus has conditions for giving gifts. He first looks at all the children and checks whether they have been “good” or “bad” this year. Only wise and wise children receive gifts from Santa Claus at Christmas.

The song also mentions that Santa Claus has a list with the children’s names on it and he checks it to see who deserves gifts. He rechecks the list that no good child is left without a gift.

In these lyrics, the singer tells how Santa Claus keeps a close watch on all children around the world, throughout the year. So every time a child does something wrong it gets caught on Santa’s radar and the “awesomeness” of the child’s Christmas present diminishes. So the singer asks the children to be good and to do good all the time.

This song was probably an effective tool in teaching children to behave well at the time.
