Billie Eilish – Bellyache (Lyrics Review and Song Meaning)

“Bellyache” is a track from Billie Eilish’s feature debut titled “Don’t smile at me” released in August 2017. Even after her hit debut studio album “WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” her debut EP is still one of the best works produced by Billie Eilish and her brother FINNEAS.

Billie’s debut EP, “Don’t smile at me” also featured other hits like “idontwannabeyouanymore”, “ocean eyes”, “COPYCAT” and more. Among them, “bellyache” occupies a special place as the track that defines Billie Eilish as an artist.

The lyrics to “Bellyache”, written by both Billie and Finneas, speak of his murderous tendencies. Billie explicitly details the murder of her friends, her lover, what she does even with corpses, and what goes through her mind. In an interview, Billie Eilish explained her take on the song;

[“Bellyache” is] downright a song about the murder. We have a bunch of songs like this: crazy stories about these fictitious [situations]. We love to write about things that we go through and things that people relate to, but it’s also a lot of fun putting on a character and acting a certain way. This character [in the song] it’s not me, but it is too. The song is really about doing terrible things and not really knowing [why]. We’ve got this whole idea about it – like, you do these terrible things and then you’re like, “Wait, what am I doing? Why did I just do this? Where is my Mind? It may be in the gutter!

The clip shows Billie Eilish dressed in all yellow pulling a cart full of black garbage bags down a deserted highway. The garbage bags appear full, resembling the “body” parts of the people Billie killed. Or it could also be the money she stole from her victims. At the end of the video, Billie Eilish is surprised by a solemn policeman with whom they engage in an intense gaze contest. The withered sunflower on the road looks like Billie Eilish’s future as she gets caught red-handed by the police.

The term “stomachache” here refers to a disturbing sensation in his stomach. This feeling is probably due to the fact that her inner self is not able to agree with what she did: murder her friends. In the lyrics, Billie says she thought she would have felt better murdering the people she loves and loves, but that’s not the case. The guilty conscience for her actions now hangs over Billie now and it causes an unsettling feeling in her womb.

“Noose” is a knotted rope used to kill herself, and Billie says that even though she claims she’s okay with his actions, she knows it’s a noose around her neck.
