Adele – Easy On Me | Lyrics Meaning Explained

2021 is the year of music’s resurrection after being trampled by the pandemic throughout 2020. To prove it, even Adele is coming back with new music, and it’s her first music since 2015. Adele teased an excerpt from the single “Easy On Me” and a music video, which at first glance is going to be a heartbreaking hymn.

Adele has released three studio albums so far, titled according to her age at the time of writing each album. As such, her 2021 album will be titled “30,” although the singer turns 33 this year. This tells us that Adele’s new album has been in the works for years behind the scenes. His latest album, “25”, gave birth to his most iconic song “Hello”.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Adele explained her feelings on the new album; “It’s sensitive for me, this record, how much I love it. always say that 21 no longer belongs to me. Everyone took it so much to their hearts. I’m not letting go of this one. This is my album. I want to share myself with everyone, but I don’t think I’ll ever let this one go. “

Adele teased a preview clip of “Easy On Me” and its music video on October 5, 2021, just ten days before the release. In the clip, we see Adele inserting a tape into her car’s cassette player, cranking up the volume, and driving down a country road. Sheets of musical notes fly from the backseat of her car, and Adele has no worries about them. She casually runs her hand in the wind blowing around the car. The music in the song seems to be piano heavy.

In an interview with Vogue magazine, Adele revealed the song’s chorus;

“Take it easy with me baby
I was still a child
I did not have the opportunity to
Feel the world around me.

Adele “Easy On Me” Lyrics Song Meaning And Review

Verse 1

In the song’s opening verse, Adele compares her crumbling relationship to a river. She says she can’t find any more gold in this river. What was once everything to her – her source of life, joy and the most precious thing in the world, has now become something that consumes her.

I know there is hope in these waters
But I can’t bring myself to swim
When I drown in the silence

Instead of swimming in these waters, Adele drowns. It’s not that she can’t swim, but rather that she can’t make herself want to swim in these waters anymore. What kept her afloat in those waters weighs her now. The relationship is not what it used to be.

The song could very well refer to Adele’s divorce from her ex-husband Simon Konecki. Court proceedings were finalized in early 2021, although divorce petitions were filed as early as 2019. Court rulings were finalized with joint custody of their 9-year-old son.

In the song’s lyrics, however, Adele tries to keep her hopes up. She says there is still life in these waters. But the river must slow down so that it can float. If her husband continued to exclude her, the relationship was not going to live.

Verse 2

In these lyrics, Adele says that she tried to change the ways of doing things with her husband for the sake of their child. But they were both deeply stuck in their own ways and it seems he didn’t want to meet her halfway. She did her best to change her ways. She has changed a lot. But it was not enough. She gave up what made her happy for the happiness of her husband and her child. But it was not enough.

I changed who I was to put you both first
But now I give up

There is so much that a person can change before they start to break down. Adele quit before that. It got to the point that any extra effort was not worth it.

Adele certainly feels guilty about the effect of their divorce on her son. In the same interview with Vogue magazine, Adele explained that her album “30” would explain her divorce to her 9-year-old daughter.

In the song hook, Adele appears to be addressing her son. She asks him to be indulgent with her for having made the decision to separate from her father. This will certainly complicate things for the child and deprive him of the opportunity to grow up between the love of his two parents under one roof. For that, Adele is sorry. But there are certainly limits to how much and how much.

In the song deck, Adele explains that she had the best intentions for all of her family and herself. Maybe forcing yourself to live in this mess of a relationship would hurt everyone more than getting a divorce. Maybe loving their son from afar is the best of a worse situation. But Adele acknowledges that no matter how hard she tried or what good intentions she had, there’s always a chance she’ll turn out to be the “bad guy” in this whole scenario. The public only sees divorce. They don’t see the struggles and the efforts to make it work. Adele won’t be surprised if the blame for her marriage breakdown falls on her! The company likes to do that.
